The very first step that you need to take when you are looking for low auto insurance rates is to review car insurance. The first step before you even think if buying car insurance is to review car insurance and double check if you have the right auto insurance coverage.

Car insurance in Washington State is mandatory requirements. The minimum auto insurance requirements for Washington are Bodily injury liability of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident limit. The property damage limit required is $10,000. The uninsured motorist coverage is not compulsory here. For drivers from other states it is mandatory to have the above limits in your auto insurance coverage.

Once, you review car insurance coverage, the second thing that you need to review is your personal particulars like change in address, your change in status, additional drivers, your driving record. Any change in the above is crucial for the getting low auto insurance rates. A married driving status could earn you low auto insurance rates, since this is perceived as being responsible if you are under 25 years old.

The key points to remember when you select your car insurance coverage limit is to know that in Washington state the Tort system is followed. This system means that in case of an accident the fault is decided and the person who is at fault is responsible for paying for the damages to the other. This would mean that it would be better to go for higher limits of liability coverage incase you do not want your personal assets to be touched.

Taylor Swift: What is underinsured motorist coverage? How would taking all the auto insurance coverage of underinsured motorist help me.

Response: Taylor, we discussed this already but let me tell you this again that you need to compare auto insurance quote and coverages before you buy auto insurance. Each of the coverage has its own  risk which is covered, in short you are paid a claim only if you have the coverage for the same. The underinsured motorist protection pays you for damages that exceed the amount of coverage carried by a driver who is considered underinsured. Remember that UIM will only pay up to the limits of your policy after subtracting the amount paid by the other driver’s insurance. This means that the amount listed as your UIM limit is the total amount paid by both insurance companies, not the additional amount your insurance company will pay after the other driver’s insurance pays. Both UM and UIM apply to you and any passengers in your car, and to you and others listed on your insurance policy (including family members) when in other cars.

Uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) coverage may seem strange, especially considering many people already have collision coverage on their car insurance. However, for careful drivers who don’t have collision coverage, UMPD can be a good way to protect their car from uninsured drivers without raising their premium a lot. In addition, a lower deductible for UMPD is frequently cheaper than collision coverage with the same low deductible. UMPD does not apply in hit-and-run accidents, because UMPD coverage is cheaper than collision coverage—making it very tempting for some drivers to make a “hit-and-run” claim under their UM coverage instead of their collision coverage, or to purchase UM coverage and not have collision coverage at all.

Uninsured motorist bodily injury (UMBI) protection can help you in another way. If you’re a pedestrian and you carry this coverage and you get hit by a car while you’re trying to cross the street, the coverage could pay your medical expenses and lost wages. That could be important, because even if you have medical payments coverage and health insurance, those still won’t pay for lost wages. You could get coverage for your lost wages by purchasing disability insurance, which many people have through their employer, but it would not cover your passengers or family members, and could disappear if you switch jobs. In addition to protecting you as a pedestrian, UM/UIM can also protect you and your family members traveling in other cars.

One thing to remember is that you should first inform the insurance company of the accident before you take action.

Brad : I live in Georgia and a friend of mine was telling me that I should take an Uninsured motorist coverage since I would be at an advantage. Can you let me know more of this. What is stacking of limits? How will this affect my auto insurance?

Response : You need to constantly compare auto insurance quote both for coverage and also the rates. You need to take an uninsured motorist coverage to get the benefit if someone who is uninsured gets involved in an accident with you and injuries you and he is at fault. Let me show you how it would work for you if this happens. Presently there are a lot of people in USA who do not have an auto insurance policy and are uninsured.

In Georgia, underinsured motorist protection falls within the uninsured motorist statute.
Prior to the effective date of the new statute [January 1, 2009] an insured can only access up to the difference in the liability provided by an at-fault driver’s liability policy limits and the limit provided the insured under his/her uninsured motorist coverage. Thus, if the at-fault driver had a $50,000 liability limit and the not at-fault other driver had an uninsured motorist limit of $100,000, the maximum protection for the not at-fault driver from his/her uninsured motorist coverage is only $50,000. The insured taking coverage from his/her uninsured motorist limit is not entitled to the full limit provided under current law.
At-fault driver = $50,000 Liability Payment
Not at-fault driver = $100,000 UM Limit
Payment due from UM Coverage = $100,000 – $50,000 = $50,000¹
In the same loss situation above, if the at-fault driver had a $50,000 liability limit and the not at-fault driver had a $50,000 uninsured motorist limit, the not at-fault driver would not be entitled to any payment under his/her uninsured motorist coverage.
At-fault driver = $50,000 Liability Payment
Not at-fault driver = $50,000 UM Limit
Payment due from UM Coverage = $50,000 – $50,000 = 0
Beginning January 1, 2009 insureds will be able to get the benefit up to their full uninsured motorist limit when an at-fault uninsured/underinsured motorist is responsible for damages. The change simply means that the full amount of selected uninsured motorist limits can be used as an additional limit of coverage, without offset, from the liability limit of the underinsured at-fault motorist. For the examples above the formulas would change as follows:
At-fault driver = $50,000 Liability Payment
Not at-fault driver = $100,000 UM Limit
Payment due from UM Coverage = $100,000

Beginning January 1, 2009 the Uninsured Motorist statute expressly allows an insurer to “exclude”[offset] personal or bodily injury or death payments for which the insured has been compensated “pursuant to medical payments or workers’ compensation laws.”

The premium payable for this coverage of uninsured motorist is very less almost meger compared to the advantage you can obtain if this accident takes place. Make sure you compare car insurance quotes and review auto insurance coverage to ensure that you have taken the Uninsured Motorist coverage.
Good luck.

Drew Bress : I live in Texas. I have two auto insurance policies. Would I be allowed to use both my policy limits in case of an accident with uninsured motorist?

Response : First let me expalin the use of both limits in terms of insurance to you. If you have two polices of each $1million for uninsured motorist coverage, than if you meet with an accident obviously with one vehicle than when you want to utilize both the limits it is called stacking of polices. Insurance companies normally have an anti-stacking provision in their polices which would not allow the using of both limits of the policies.

In Texas in a particular case when a person was injured due to an uninsured motorist, he was allowed to use both the limits of his policy for the same. Thus as per the gist of the judgment given below :
“The Texas statute does not speak specifically to the stacking issue, but, as evidenced in the caselaw, the courts have expressed a clear understanding that the purpose of the statute is that insureds recover for their actual damages and that a policy provision preventing full recovery conflicts with that public policy and is thus invalid. Therefore, it appears that in Texas, the “two or more auto policies” provision, when coupled with the intent and purpose of the uninsured motorist statute, will not operate to prevent stacking where the insured has two policies with an insurer and their actual damages are greater than the maximum recovery under one policy’s uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage.

The stacking and anti-stacking of the policies would depend from state to state and the provisions and whether there has been a case decided in the same lines in the state.

Presently in the states due to recession, many people are driving auto’s uninsured and so it is very important that you have this coverage. Compare auto insurance coverages at all times and reviewyour auto insurance policy to ensure that you are fully provided for and insured under most circumstances. It is wiser to pay some price now for the future when you are in a tight situation.

What is the uninsured motorist coverage and PIP coverage ?

In addition to compulsory auto liability coverage, some states require drivers to carry uninsured motorist coverage and others require drivers carry both uninsured (UM) and underinsured (UIM) motorist protection. Fifteen states plus the District of Columbia mandate uninsured motorist coverage for its drivers; they are: Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Virginia and West Virginia.

Only six states enforce compulsory uninsured AND underinsured motorist coverage protection. They are: Connecticut, Maine, Minnesota, North Carolina (1/1/09), Vermont and Wisconsin.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) also known as “No Fault” protection is the last major compulsory auto coverage law to which drivers may be subject. Sixteen states have in place compulsory PIP laws: Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Utah. As is evidenced by its sheer concentration, PIP is very prevalent in the Northeast US; drivers in six of the 11 states from Maryland through Maine operate subject to “no fault” statutes.

Please Review car insurance  for checking the correct coverage which are mandatory and best  auto insurance rates. Happy and safe motoring. Bon Voyage.
